Resided in Akron by 1844 and was an associate of Col. Simon Perkins in the wool business. His home still stands in Akron on what was once known as Perkins Hill. He had 21 children. He fought continually for an end to slavery. On Oct. 16, 1859, he and a small group of men captured the arsenal at Harper's Ferry. He was arrested and on Dec. 2, 1859 he was executed in the presence of 10,000 people. He is buried in Elba, New York.
