"T" Cities of Summit County


TALLMADGE

Settled 1807 by Rev. David BACON. Bacon once started a religious Utopia here. Originally part of Portage County.

Tallmadge Tidbits:

Harvey B. SPELLMAN, whose daughter became the wife of the late John D. ROCKEFELLER, attended the Tallmadge Academy. Spellman was an Akron merchant.

The first white child in Tallmadge Township was Amos WRIGHT. He became a noted pioneer physician.

Col. George M. WRIGHT from Tallmadge had full charge of his friend William McKINLEY's funeral arrangements.

Tallmadge Circle Greek Revival church is the oldest church in Ohio still in use as a place of worship.

George W. Crouse, a famous face in Summit County History, came from Tallmadge.

John & Nancy Cruthers came to Tallmadge in 1811.  It is said that Nancy rode horseback from Eastern PA carrying her baby in her arms.

Jairus & Irene Bronson arrived in 1819.  

Russell A. Ashmun who was elected surveyor on the formation of Summit County resided here with his wife Marcia. Russell and the former Marcia Wright were married in 1834.

Benjamin & Comfort Fenn arrived July 14, 1817.  Mr Fenn died from a fever on July 25, 1817.

Martin Camp came to Tallmadge in 1815.  He married Sallie Coe in 1816.  Sallie was a teacher at the Center District School.

Frank L. Skinner was the rural mail carrier here for a number of years.

Dr. Amos C. Wright and wife Lydia (Kinney) settled here in 1808.  Dr. Wright built the first brick house in Tallmadge.  There were one or more Wrights in the choir of the Congregational church for over a century.

On Bucks Hill an Ard Welton lived.  He made guns by hand (even some for the government).  He had a "beautiful daughter"; Margaret Anah. She eventually married Lemuel Porter (apparently over her father's protests).

Abraham & Abigail Hine settled here in 1820.

TWINSBURG

Settled 1817(?) or 1824. (I have encountered conflicting dates), by Ethan ALLING. Originally part of Portage County. Established 1825.  Situated on Tinkers' Creek 18 miles North-Northeast from Akron and 20 miles South by East from Cleveland.
