The Erie

Built the signal tower at Point Lookout, on the sourthern end of Copley Swamp.  Also built a fort in the middle of the same swamp. Destroyed by the Iroquois.


Mound Builders

Once occupied this land. One such mound is located near Botzum.


Iroquois

Drove the Eries out with white man's weapons.  Possessed in 1654 what would be the Western Reserve.  


Migratory Indians

Delaware, Ottawa, Wyandot, Chippewa, Shawnee.  It is recored that in 1760 the Delawares held white prisoners in their village at the Great Bend of the Cuyahoga. In the 1760-1790 era many Indian villages existed along what is now Akron.

 Some are more well known:

Old Cuyahoga Town: Located in what is now NOrth Akron.

Silver Lake contained two Indian Villages.

Turkeyfoot Lake: Delaware village of Chief Wam-te-kek

Long Lake: Village of Chief Hopocon (aka Capt. Pipe).

Botzum: Chief Pontiac's camp.
